Hytrans HS150 HVP used to de-water in the UK Alkborough Flats North Lincolnshire

HYTRANS high volume pumps were deployed to remove tidal floodwater from Alkborough Flats in North Lincolnshire in December 2013 following severe flooding.

These mobile pumps, operated by the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, pumped millions of litres of water from a large lake of floodwater that had formed behind a 3-metre flood barrier, back into the Humber River. The portable, hydraulically driven submersible floating pump units could be positioned in the floodwater by just two people. The pumps performed well, handling salt water, mud, and dirt effectively.

The flooding was caused by an east coast tidal surge over a 24-hour period, with flood levels peaking on December 5th. Alkborough Flats is situated in a low-lying area around the Humber River, covering 440 hectares on the south bank of the Humber Estuary, east of the confluence between the River Trent and the River Humber. This site is part of the Environment Agency’s flood risk management scheme, with recent tidal defence developments costing £10.2 million.

During the flood event, the Flats stored a significant amount of the tidal surge water, preventing more severe flooding in North Lincolnshire. However, water from the Humber breached new sea defences, submerging a sewage works, a car park, and the surrounding area. Some sheep were lost, and the surface of several miles of footpaths and access tracks was washed away, leaving the area covered in mud and sediment.

Due to sea level rise, tidal surges are expected to become more frequent in the coming years. The UK government has numerous nationally deployable HYTRANS pumping sets, which were ready for use both before and after the event.
